In the Human Design System, Splenic Authority belongs to charts with a defined Spleen and no definition in the Solar Plexus or Sacral above it in the system’s order. The Spleen is the center the system associates with instinct, immunity, and survival — the oldest, most primal awareness in its model — and when it stands as the authority, the system says decisions are guided by that instinct rather than by mood or gut response.

In the system’s terms

Splenic Authority is described as the most fleeting of the inner authorities. Like the Sacral, it is said to operate in the present moment, but the system draws a sharper line around it: the splenic voice is characterised as quiet, subtle, and — most distinctively — as something that speaks only once. The teaching holds that this awareness offers its signal a single time, in the instant a situation arises, and does not repeat or argue for itself. A person is told that if they hesitate and ask the Spleen to confirm, the confirmation will not come; the moment has passed.

The system frames this as a kind of spontaneous, protective knowing — the sense that keeps a body safe and well — and contrasts it with the louder, more insistent chatter of the mind, which it says can talk a person out of the splenic signal by the time a decision is made. The difficulty the system attaches to this authority is precisely its quietness: it asks the design to trust a first, soft impression over any later reasoning. In the system’s hierarchy the Spleen sits third, below the Solar Plexus and the Sacral, so it governs only where neither of those is defined. As with every authority, this is the system’s own description, set out as part of its model rather than as a claim this archive evaluates.

Where the authority framework came from

Authority is not original to the earliest Human Design teaching. Alongside the Types and Strategy, it was introduced by Ra Uru Hu in May 1997, at a chart-reading seminar in Taos, New Mexico — four years into his American teaching and a decade after his 1987 account of receiving the system. The instinct-and-authority model taught today was a later addition to the system’s earlier material.

That history is documented from the primary record in the archive’s books, ZENO and The Voice on Ibiza.

Sources: the authority framework and its 1997 introduction are documented from the primary record in ZENO and The Voice on Ibiza; see also the archive’s note on validation. The system’s own definitions are published by Jovian Archive and the IHDS.

The authority by other names

Authority is another layer the schools mostly leave alone by name. Quantum Human Design keeps the decision-making apparatus while renaming the types around it, and no verified renaming of the inner authorities was located in its own published materials. The Gene Keys does not use authority: it replaces the decision-making instruction with contemplation of the sixty-four keys, which is the clearest single difference between the two systems.

Short labels are carried here for identification and comparison, never the other authors’ fuller descriptions. Where a school’s treatment could not be verified from its own materials, this archive records that rather than inferring one. The full map is at Divergence.
