In the Human Design System, Ego Authority — also called Heart or Will Authority — belongs to charts where the Heart center carries the decision, with no Solar Plexus, Sacral, or Spleen defined above it in the system’s order. The Heart is the center the system associates with willpower, self-worth, and the ego’s drive, and where it stands as the authority the system says decisions turn on a single question: what does this person genuinely want?
In the system’s terms
The system frames this design as one that can, unusually, trust its own desire. Where other authorities are told to set the self-interested “I want” aside, Ego Authority is described as reaching truth precisely through it — through what the Heart is actually willing to commit its energy to. The teaching holds that this design should notice whether a real want is present, and should be wary of agreeing to anything it does not truly desire, because the willpower to follow through is said to appear only where the wanting is authentic.
The system further distinguishes how that will reaches the world. Where the Heart connects through to the Throat, it speaks of an ego-manifested authority, one that can voice its wants directly and initiate from them; where the Heart is defined but projected inward through the self, it describes an ego-projected authority that recognises its wants more quietly and waits to be drawn out. In both cases the decisive test is the same — the honest presence or absence of desire — and the system positions this authority fourth in its hierarchy, governing only where the emotional, sacral, and splenic centers are all open. These are the system’s own terms, offered as part of its model rather than as claims this archive evaluates.
Where the authority framework came from
Authority arrived in Human Design later than the framework it now sits inside. With the Types and Strategy, it was introduced by Ra Uru Hu in May 1997, at a seminar in Taos, New Mexico — four years into his American teaching and a decade after his 1987 account of receiving the system. The will-and-authority model taught today was a later overlay on the system’s earlier work.
