In the Human Design System, Lunar Authority belongs to Reflectors — the rarest type, whose charts have no defined centers at all. With nothing fixed inside to consult, the system does not give this design an inner authority in the usual sense; it ties the decision instead to the sky, and specifically to the movement of the Moon. Lunar Authority is the only authority unique to a single type, and the only one the system measures in weeks rather than moments.
In the system’s terms
The instruction the system attaches to this design is the most demanding on time of any authority: wait a full lunar cycle — about 28 days — before a major decision. The reasoning offered is that the Reflector’s total openness means it has no single, stable vantage point from which to know a thing at once. Instead, the system says, clarity accumulates as the transiting Moon passes through the whole chart over its monthly circuit, activating each open center in turn and letting the person sample how a choice feels from every angle before it settles.
Through that cycle the design is encouraged to talk the decision over with trusted people and to notice how it reads at different points of the transit, much as the mental design is told to use sounding boards — but stretched across the full arc of the moon rather than a single conversation. The system frames the patience this requires not as delay but as the design’s proper instrument, and warns that a Reflector pressed to decide on the spot is being asked to work against the way the type is said to reach truth. It stands seventh and last in the system’s order, apart from the inner authorities as the authority of the open chart. As with every authority, this is the system’s own description, set out as part of its model rather than as a claim this archive evaluates.
Where the authority framework came from
Authority is not original to the earliest Human Design teaching. Alongside the Types and Strategy, it was introduced by Ra Uru Hu in May 1997, at a chart-reading seminar in Taos, New Mexico — four years into his American teaching and a decade after his 1987 account of receiving the system. The lunar-cycle instruction now taught to every Reflector was a later addition to the system’s earlier material.
That history is documented from the primary record in the archive’s books, ZENO and The Voice on Ibiza.
