Noble Sciences: Dr. Eleanor Haspel-Portner's Research
Dr. Eleanor Haspel-Portner, Ph.D., is the only person Ra Uru Hu formally commissioned to test the Human Design System scientifically. This page documents what her research found — what it statistically validated, what it did not, and the system she built afterward — from her own published materials. It is the fullest single-page account of that research on this archive; the biographical record is at /teachers/eleanor-haspel-portner.
This page reports Dr. Haspel-Portner's published research and her own stated conclusions, attributed to her throughout. The archive neither endorses nor disputes her findings; it records them, with sources, so readers can consult the underlying documents and weigh them for themselves.
The commission, 1996–1999
Haspel-Portner came to Human Design in 1996, after seeing an advertisement for the system in The Mountain Astrologer. She brought a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago's Committee on Human Development (1971), with training spanning psychology, sociology, anthropology, and biology, and more than two decades of study of esoteric and astrological systems and their clinical applications. In 1999 Ra Uru Hu formally asked her and her husband, Marvin M. Portner, M.D., to validate the Human Design System scientifically and clinically — working, by her account, independently of the general Human Design community. The research vehicle was Rave Life Sciences, LP, and the collaborators on the first paper were Haspel-Portner, Ra Uru Hu, Marvin Portner M.D., Erik Memmert, and Charles Haspel.
What she tested, and at what scale
The stated task of Rave Life Sciences was, in the authors' words, "the documentation and validation of the Human Design and associated systems … to prove that these systems can stand the rigors of testing." The foundational statistical test drew five samples of 5,000 birth records at random from a general population. Over the following years her research base grew to what her later materials describe as 30,000 statistically matched cases and 15,000 clinical cases — roughly 45,000 cases in total, one of the largest data sets ever assembled on a Human Design construct.
What the research validated: Type
The published finding concerns Type — the classification of an individual, from their birth data, as Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, or Reflector. In the abstract of Preliminary Research on the Human Design System and Health, the authors report:
Type, a key construct in Human Design System theory, was verified in 5 samples of 5000 birth records drawn at random from a general population. Type holds up as a highly significant differentiating variable in all groups far beyond the 99% level of confidence. Furthermore, all groups tested have consistent frequency of occurrence of each Type.
The paper frames this as the first time, as far as the authors knew, that an esoteric system had received "this kind of scientific validation for mapping the structure of energy flow in the body." To this day it remains the only statistically documented validation of any Human Design construct against a general-population sample — a fact this archive records on its Teaching Record as well.

What the research did not validate
The larger conclusion Haspel-Portner drew from the full data set was critical of the system as a whole. In her own words, she concluded that Human Design is
an incomplete, faulty, and disempowering system because it is only a small snapshot of an individual's process in the first three months of their development.
In other words: the single construct her statistics confirmed — Type — held up, but the broader interpretive apparatus, in her assessment, did not capture the whole of a person. That judgment, from the researcher Ra himself commissioned, is part of why the archive keeps the distinction between what the record establishes and what any tradition claims.

Noble Sciences and the Four Worlds
After departing Ra's organization in 2002, Haspel-Portner built her own expanded framework — Noble Sciences and Beyond Human Design — from the same research data. Its central instrument, the Noble Energy Maps, keeps the Human Design bodygraph as a foundation and adds a Four Worlds layer — Mental, Emotional, Physical, and Spiritual — drawn from the Kabbalistic Tree of Life and astrology. In this system, each Channel is described as it functions across all four dimensions rather than as a single behavioral keynote. She presents this as the completion her data indicated the original system was missing.

The publications
Between 1999 and 2002, Haspel-Portner co-authored 13 books with Ra Uru Hu, published by Rave Life Sciences, including the Monographs on Human Design and Health series. In 2025 she republished her research and released updated volumes under Noble Sciences.

Departure and relationship to the IHDS
Haspel-Portner departed Ra's organization in 2002. She was named the following year in Ra Uru Hu's 25 July 2003 "Misrepresentation" letter, and Noble Sciences has operated independently of the IHDS since. The archive documents the letter and the surrounding record on /record and /erasure.
