Coming home to yourself

You can let something describe you without letting it define you.

Plenty of people find something genuinely useful in Human Design. This part is for the ones who found something else — the slow drift from this describes me to this decides for me: waiting for an “invitation” until life stalled, reading every feeling as “not-self,” running every choice past a chart before trusting your own read on your own life. If any of that is familiar, the first thing to know is that you are not broken, and you are not alone. The description is a gift; the definition is a leash. You are not your chart. You’re the one deciding what to do with it.

You’re not alone in feeling this

Others have stood exactly where you’re standing — losing time to “waiting,” feeling their world shrink, wondering if they were the problem — and found their way out. Reading how they named it can make it easier to name your own.

Reclaiming your own authority

The healthiest voices in Human Design — including its own founder — say there is no authority outside yourself. Take that literally, and further than the system did: your chart is not your authority, a reading is not your authority, and neither is this page. The practice is small and repeatable — make one ordinary decision this week using only your own judgment, on purpose, to remember that you still can.

Your care is not “conditioning”

Therapy, medication, a doctor, a good friend’s honest worry — these are not the “not-self” world to be transcended. If a framework has been standing between you and the support you need, that is the displacement to reverse first. A tool that leaves you less able to get help has failed at the one job that mattered.

Freeing yourself from a label that hurts

Sometimes the chart itself becomes the source of the distress — a word like “undefined” or “damaged” quietly rewriting how you see yourself. You are more than any five-letter type, and no accurate description of a person ends in a limitation.

If the leaving is heavy. Stepping back from a system that organized your life can feel like grief, and disorientation on the way out is normal — it is real work, not a sign you failed at anything. Please don’t do it alone; talk to a qualified therapist, not back into the room you left.

Nothing on this page is medical advice. The linked discussions are public and are shared as recognition and encouragement, not as instruction; individual commenters are not named.

A companion volume — The Cult Within, forthcoming from A. R. Sayer — goes further into keeping the tool without letting it keep you.

Keep what genuinely helps. Discard what doesn’t. The only authority that was ever real is your own.

A curated path through Zeno & Chaitanyo's Zen Human Design Transmission newsletters, for readers unwinding the post-1997 "Four Types" overlay — what the original circle calls the caste system and Jovianism (the "JOV-97 virus") — and returning to the original mechanics (Definition Type and Mode) and to awareness over labels.

The break is dated precisely: Ra introduced the "Four Types," "Authority," and "Strategy" at the Chart Reading Seminar in Taos, May 17–18, 1997. Everything built on them afterward became Jovianism. As Chaitanyo puts it: "In awareness there is freedom and there is love… Awareness equals responsibility. This is what Authority is in Zen Human Design."

All newsletters are public at humandesignsystem.com/archive. Each blurb below is from a full read.

Deconditioning, step by step

Real Human Design doesn’t tell you how to behave. It tells you how you behave.

A methodical way through, in the authors’ own words. Each step is drawn from the Transmission newsletters, quoted in full and linked to its source. The sequence moves from seeing the overlay, through taking apart its labels, to the practice of awareness the original system was always pointing at.

1 Name the overlay

Deconditioning begins with recognition. The Jovian vocabulary — “Type,” “Authority,” “Strategy,” “Profile” — is an appropriation layered onto Human Design from 1997 on, shaped for a market. Start with the master term and see how it was bent.

Authority

Sincere seekers are often attracted to Human Design, but soon start feeling uncomfortable because "something just feels off." That's because most of the major terms of Jovianism are appropriations, taken from disciplines older and more mature than young Human Design, their meaning then slightly altered with Human Design jargon, claiming “synthesis.” From Rave to Mandala to I Ching to Genes to Type to Not-self to Authority and Awareness, it all seductively resembles the original, but just isn't quite it. This creates kind of a parallel, cultish world, slightly offset from reality, amplified through "social media."

If you really know what a mandala actually is, for example, you’ll no doubt also know that the Human Design wheel is a mandala only by a stretch of the imagination and that calling it so is a disservice to both the Human Design wheel and the mandala. It sure sounds sexy, but muddies real understanding of either.

So it is with all these appropriations. They muddy perception by seducing to substitute Ra’s limited perspective for the real thing. Substituting Awareness for cognition makes you think awareness is confined to three centers, but essentially the old yogis differ: Awareness is not only possible in all the chakras, it is necessary for "Kundalini to rise." Thus gets the meaning of “awareness” corrupted and responsibility for it shirked. And so on.

Authority, as Ra and his followers understand it, is just a substitute description of the definition someone has, weighted to fit his hierarchical caste construct. Hence, in their view, I’ve got “splenic projected authority” because my Spleen is defined and it’s valued higher than the also defined Heart in their hierarchy. Zeno had “emotional projected authority” because her Solar Plexus was defined, which again seems to rate higher than her also defined Root, Spleen, Ji, Throat and Ajna centers.

And obviously, we must have had our authorities all along, because definitions are with you from birth to death, they are what you can rely on and never change, your strength, your haven, life’s box of gifts that’s always there for you. But what is familiar and comfortable and doesn’t change isn’t the same as authority.

If that were the case, a baby would have inner authority. A still delightfully innocent toddler certainly already displays reliable traits based on definition, but I’ve never met one with inner authority. On the other hand, I’ve also seen plenty of older people without a trace of it.

Authority is earned, you’re not born with it. It is a product of personal growth, of the practice of awareness, of maturity, of wisdom. Good karma. It is not a given and not everybody earns.

Ra’s misunderstanding then leads to such baffling conclusions as that people without definition “have no inner authority,” which I find to be one of the most ridiculous assertions of the Jovian faith, right up there with the “informing, “being invited” and “responding” scams. In my experience and observation, authority most often is earned exactly in the two thirds of the body graph that remain un-activated and undefined and therefore white, which would give people without definition mechanically the greatest chance at authority.

The white territory of the body graph, what Jovianism so conveniently ignores with its appropriated version of the "not-self,” is where the work of personal growth happens. It’s where your shadows are, your vulnerabilities, your crossed wires, your buttons pushed. It’s where fear and pain and despair lurk. It’s not easy to look at and not easy to be aware of, easier to look away and keep hidden or decorated with deception. Looking requires and forms character.

Authority comes from how you approach your challenges, the uncertain and the unexpected, from your stance in the face of change, from the way you handle your insecurities and upheavals, the mistakes you make and learn from, your integrity, the attention you pay to yourself and the other in relationships, how aware you are of the impact of your definition. Your inner authority is proportional to your maturity, responsibility and awareness.

Chaitanyo

2 Take apart the “strategies”

Each caste is handed a “strategy.” But what they describe — being invited, responding, deciding — are ordinary human functions, not the property of one group. Measured against actual life, each one dissolves.

Being invited

I'm a Projector, but I don't understand my stategy.

When you write to me and want me to know who you are, please share your birth data and I'll have something real to work with. I don't care that you are a "projector" and what your supposed "strategy" is. This tells me only that you're ill with the Jovian virus. Like all the other "types," it’s just a blinder swindled upon your perception, manipulating you to feel separate and special, yet in cozy good company.

Other than occasionally being invited to a party or a meal, which is nice for everyone reardless of caste, it hardly matters whether “you are invited” or not. Invited by whom? To what? It's just entirely contrived, a useless treadmill. You justifyingly don't understand because it sure doesn't make sense.

Even the saintly notion that you’re “invited by existence” or the “universe” is a farce. Of course you are “invited,” that's why you're here! Everybody is, even the other Jovian castes. Why make the obvious a "strategy" for just one of them?

Without any invitation, without any permission, free of any caste, you are fully capable to live this life!

Responding

Confession: I’m not a “generator,” yet I respond! Frequently, even!
Non-verbal gasp! I must not be “living my design!”

If someone approaches me, I respond, if the window is open and a downpour starts, I respond, if my flip-flops start smelling, I respond, if the bladder signals or the milk boils, I respond. It's not even a question and certainly no "decision making" and I don’t wait to respond, either. It’s a frequent, normal and necessary part of everyday life, just like reflecting and reacting and projecting are and I know that’s the case for every other human being as well. All evidence says that responding is a function of life itself.

It is absurd that the Jovian cult singles out as "strategies" for select castes what in reality are pan-human, pan-life, even biological functions and it’s astonishing how easily people can be hypnotized by mantras such as the “non-verbal Sacral response.” Even Zeno in her online classes still sometimes fell for it. A little effort to question and compare it with actual life shows that response is not at all exclusive to the Sacral, causing the "generator" artifact to evaporate.

So, people with a defined Sacral, who of course naturally respond like everybody else, say, “yeah, it’s true, I belong to this type because I know I respond - this proves it!” while all the other castes are left to suspect themselves of wrong when their nature asks them to respond, which is a classic religious trick to keep the flock dependent: declare the natural a sin and offer absolution in faith.

As for "non-verbal," of course it is, everything below the Throat is. There's no special non-verbalness to the Sacral. Assigning it its own caste is just another of Ra’s sleights-of-hand to make a group feel different and special, yet in cozy company, in effect sowing division and misdirection where none is. Barring malice, it's arbitrary, too. How did the defined Sacral earn its own caste? Why not the defined Heart, or the Ajna, or the Solar Plexus? Or the virgin Ji? They all are just as unique.

The answer is obvious. Uniqueness prevents an efficient caste system, it would get far too diverse to be effectively manipulated. His “types” reduce the glory of the body graph's infinite uniqueness to just a handful of strata, Human Design redefined in his image, comfortably dumbed down for better viral marketability, a seductive mirage, a smoke screen, obscuring by now for decades what matters. Add to that the horrific “authorities” and “strategies” assigned to each caste and I can understand why "Jovianism as a crime against humanity" was one of Zeno’s pet arguments for a little while.

Bear with me. I'm waiting for a time when I can simply shine my expertise in original Human Design, rather than point out what it isn't, but so far there's still a great need for that. Once in a while I can shake someone lose or assure and encourage someone who already sees. With their awareness Human Design may yet survive.

Decision making

Did Ra leave the two modes for the energy types? And did he say nothing about how to make decisions the first years?

Assuming with “energy types” you mean the modes to do and to wait, those were present right from the start. The fact that Ra couldn’t understand them and therefore fumbled to teach them was a deciding factor in his invention of the "4 types" and their “strategies” a few years later (and another few years later, the 5th type and the many sub-types), which obliterated the two modes until I started issuing reminders about a decade ago.

“Decision making” is one of the Jovian myths with which it tries to make itself relevant and marketable, suggesting that you are in control if you were just "living your design." It’s another aspect of the glorification of doing, the bane of the west, and now the world.

In the dozens of lectures and classes I attended between 1993 and 2000, I never heard him talk about decision making. This emerged much later from his “strategies,” which, if you think about it, are nothing but advice on how to do, based on the assumption that designs to wait couldn’t possibly want anything else in life than doing, that they are just waiting to do. Ra’s blinders. The superior doer advising the poor waiter how to do. Ignorance begets arrogance. As I keep saying, a design to do is unable to understand a design to wait. His advice is absurd and damaging.

I’m not saying that designs to wait understand themselves. Two hundred years of “strive means life” conditioning has left most of them just as deluded. Just do it! Make it happen! Achieve! Make decisions! You have somewhere to go! Purpose! Destiny! Success! Jovianism is not helping.

If Human Design is any helpful in bettering humanity, it will humble doing and return waiting to its natural place. Life is a marvelous gift, not a problem to solve.

Zen. Chopping wood. Fetching water.

3 Drop the label, don’t relabel

The “life themes” are verdicts passed on whole populations. And the exit is never a better caste, nor a new brand of the same system. If you are unhappy with your caste, abandon the caste — do not exchange it for another.

Bitterness

Remarkably, because my design fits their “projector” caste, one of its innate attributes is "bitterness" and it's used by the raves to dismiss what I'm saying.

And it’s not just me, imagine, it’s the “life theme” of everybody on earth who happens to be born with an undefined Sacral and no motor defined to the Throat, excepting those with no definition at all. By my educated guess, that’s close to 40% of entire humanity! They're all condemned to a life of purgatory torturing themselves with bitterness. That's a bogglingly ignorant and hostile assessment of three billion people, but unfortunately a typical symptom of infection with the JOV-97 virus.

Bitterness comes from disappointed expectations, regardless of caste.
Those who practice awareness learn to keep expectations low.

Sidereal "Human Design"

What do you think about sidereal Human Design?

One major, fundamental insight of Human Design is that it’s not the planetary bodies within certain constellations of stars that condition life, but the neutrino stream from the entire universe. The planets are mere interference, the gods playing their games between human and eternity, like Balinese shadow puppets. The entirety of the stream, the pure totality with its god-tainted sections, is refracted through design and personality crystals, which inform all the centers and all their gates. The body graph is a schematic in color and white of this dynamic refraction.

Of course, the stars we can see with the unaided eye contribute to the neutrino stream, but their contribution is minute measured by the invisible output of the universe. In the clearest of night sky we rarely see more than 2500 stars, and they’re all located in the outer fringes of one of the spiral arms of our own Milky Way galaxy. (The farthest, faintest, visible star is a giant bright as 100,000 suns, 4000 light years away, but the Milky Way is 100,000 light years across.) The black between the stars contains infinitely more neutrinos than all the light we see. It’s only with telescopes, from Galileo’s to NASA’s, that we begin to have an idea how full it is.

From this tiny selection visible to antiquity were picked and named the constellations and evolving astrology discovered and assigned certain qualities to them and the interfering gods, the planets. Little did they know that they were assigning these values actually to the sections of the universe behind the stars they saw.

It’s a matter of perspective: Over time the stars in our vicinity slowly shift relative to our position and the cosmic neutrino stream and so the constellations named in antiquity are not in the same place anymore today. That’s called the “precession of the equinox.” However, the eternity that was behind the constellation’s stars in antiquity is still in the same place, it didn't shift along with the stars.

Sidereal astrology's alignment with those close stars is myopic, it can’t see the universe for the stars, it’s fixated on our little corner of the Milky Way. That’s why Vedic astrology nowadays is so uninspired, to say the least. It literally shifted away from truth over the past 2500 years. Western astrology, on the other hand, using tropical calculations, has reached remarkable maturity in recent decades.

“Sidereal Human Design” does not exist. It’s an oxymoron.
If it's Human Design, it's not sidereal.

Given the confusion caused by the Human Caste System, I can understand that some people might be tempted to fall for it, lured by the possibility of a better caste. But that’s an illusion based on an illusion. If you’re unhappy with your caste, you need to abandon the caste, not exchange it for another. Original Human Design, based on tropical calculations and matured by three decades, works very well without castes.

If this wasn’t convincing enough to leave sidereal “Human Design” by the deserved wayside, perhaps this is, from the witness himself: Zeno, who had been interested in astrology for decades prior, did her due diligence on the first day of our first meeting with Ra in 1993 and asked about sidereal calculations for Human Design. His short answer was that the revelation specified tropical calculations. Period.

4 See what Human Design actually is

Cleared of the overlay, the tool describes how you behave; it does not tell you how to. It points at awareness, not at answers.

The New "Original"

Real Human Design doesn’t tell you how to behave. It tells you how you behave.

It’s a tool for awareness, the awareness of your self and how it gets pulled through this, your very life. You have lived your design your entire life, you never had a choice. Heaven or hell and everything in between, you are the expert. Your life experience and measure of awareness reveal what the body graph means, not the other way ‘round. You’re learning to ask the right questions instead of peddling or hankering for answers.

Zen can’t be nailed down and then passed on. It’s an individual process, dynamic, live, ongoing, a commitment, an attitude. The methodology can be taught, but not its results.

5 Practice awareness

The work itself. Awareness is not confined to three centers; it encompasses the whole graph and the whole of a life. Seeing what is, instead of what you want.

Awareness

Awareness is not found in the body graph. It encompasses it. It is the ability to take a step back from yourself and see your play on the stage of life. While being driven by your necessities and desires, for example, you take a step back and witness those necessities and desires, in the present. You don’t judge, you don't interfere, you don’t try to manipulate, you just see, while life is going on. Apart from rare cases of grace, this isn’t automatic, but has to be practiced and can seem hard. But even just realizing that this is actually possible and to commit to practicing is a monumental pivot in a life. And from then on, it’s an upward spiral.

Awareness leads to acceptance.
Acceptance leads to the absence of friction.
Absence of friction is peace.
Peace is love.
Love is freedom.

Chaitanyo

Start here — the spine

  1. The Human Caste System

The keystone. Dates the 1997 overlay, calls the Four Types a caste, and draws the core contrast: Jovianism sees you as limited to one of four Types; original Human Design sees you as unlimited. Ends on awareness as the real authority.

    https://humandesignsystem.com/archive/newsletters/2801.html
  2. Hi, I'm a 2/4 Projector

The most practical deconditioning piece. Takes apart Profile, Authority, Strategy, and "life theme" one by one, then gives an actual protocol: drop the labels, leave the Facebook groups, uninstall the software, and start over from the bare body graph image.

    https://humandesignsystem.com/archive/newsletters/2603.html
  3. The New "Original"

Names the "JOV-97 virus" directly and warns that even "the original" is now being marketed back to you. "Real Human Design doesn't tell you how to behave. It tells you how you behave."

    https://humandesignsystem.com/archive/newsletters/3301.html

Track A — dismantling the caste (the Four Types)

  1. The "Manifesting Generator"

Shows the "manifesting generator" as a patch on a broken model — proof the Four Types can't hold real uniqueness — and reframes it as a simple split definition, to do.

    https://humandesignsystem.com/archive/newsletters/3107.html
  2. Manifestors and Such

A label is not the thing it labels; it hides it. Dismantles "Manifestor" and shows how much more the underlying mechanics reveal than the catchy name.

    https://humandesignsystem.com/archive/newsletters/2007.html

Track B — the core doctrines to unlearn

  1. The Not-Self

Dismantles the central Jovian doctrine: there is no "not-self," only lack of awareness. The white two-thirds of the chart is not the enemy — it's where life and growth come in.

    https://humandesignsystem.com/archive/newsletters/2004.html
  2. Open Centers

The companion piece: you have all nine centers working all the time. "Undefined" is not "deficient." Calling two-thirds of you the not-self is, in his words, Jovianism's greatest error.

    https://humandesignsystem.com/archive/newsletters/2604.html
  3. Living Your Design

Takes apart the very premise of the "Living Your Design" program: you are already living your design — the idea that you must learn to is the old religious move of inventing a flaw to sell the cure. Names the deconditioning process explicitly.

    https://humandesignsystem.com/archive/newsletters/2003.html

Track C — the stance that replaces belief (awareness and not-knowing)

  1. Awareness

Reclaims awareness from Ra's three "awareness centers" (renamed here "perception"), restoring it to the whole chart. "Awareness leads to acceptance… Peace is love. Love is freedom."

    https://humandesignsystem.com/archive/newsletters/3302.html
  2. Not Knowing

Belief is the avoidance of the pain of not knowing. The original was offered as a hypothesis to test against your own life — the scientific stance Jovianism replaced with declarations.

    https://humandesignsystem.com/archive/newsletters/3103.html
  3. Be Quiet and Listen

On readings: the practitioner who only recites the colored third and won't listen can label you but can't understand you. Awareness requires your experience, not a packet of keynotes.

    https://humandesignsystem.com/archive/newsletters/2005.html
  4. Centers, Conditioning & Consciousness

The foundation. Why a diet of Type/Profile/Authority/Strategy leaves you with no ground to actually read a chart — and what conditioning really is. (Zeno's flagship class.)

    https://humandesignsystem.com/archive/newsletters/2001.html

Context — why the overlay exists

  1. The Business of Human Design

The commercial DNA: a pyramid of clients → analysts → teachers, and a caste system built to sort unique people into sellable tiers. "Human Design will be bigger than Microsoft."

    https://humandesignsystem.com/archive/newsletters/3102.html
  2. The "Black Book"

Useful correction: the 1992 "Black Book" is not the clean original — it was an immature draft. The concise presentation of the original mechanics is Human Design Revealed.

    https://humandesignsystem.com/archive/newsletters/3002.html

Watch — Zeno in her own voice

Zeno's teaching and critique videos, on the Zen Human Design channel (https://www.youtube.com/@ZenHumanDesign — Chaitanyo's channel; ~61 videos in all). Curated to the deconditioning set: learning to read the body graph without labels, and the critique of the Type system. (The channel's personal accounts of the conflict with Ra are part of the documentary record but are left off this reading-and-watching path.)

Learn the original (reading the body graph, not labels)

The alternative

End with her

All fifteen candidate issues were read in full. Two were cut: 31.05 "Notables Database" (a software announcement) and 20.02 "Dysfunctional Family Dynamics" (a class promo), neither a deconditioning essay. The newsletter blurbs are from full reads; the videos are curated by title/theme and the channel's framing (not watched end-to-end). Order is by role in the deconditioning arc, not by date.
