The Human Design System carries a vocabulary of its own — and that vocabulary has shifted as the
system moved from Ra Uru Hu’s original register into the language of later schools and derivative
systems. This page fixes the terms as the archive has documented them: what each term denotes
within the system, and, where the record shows it, how later teaching renamed or reframed it. It
reports what the system claims; it does not evaluate those claims.
Every definition below is drawn from the archive’s documented record; the fuller treatment,
including the term-by-term history of the reframings, is
Divergence — Master Glossary.
The Chart and Its Mechanics
BodyGraph
The chart of nine centers, gates, and channels, calculated from birth data. In later,
popularized teaching the term is often softened to “your chart,” “your blueprint,” or “your
energy map.” The visual bodygraph image was produced by Jürgen Saupe from 1992.

Centers
The nine centers of the bodygraph, each defined (colored) or undefined (white) in a given
chart. In the system’s account, this determines which energies are consistent and which are
conditioned.
Source: /doctrines, Section 1.
Channels
The 36 channels of the bodygraph, each formed by a pair of gates and organized into circuits.
A channel that is fully activated joins two centers and contributes to a chart’s Definition.
Source: /doctrines, Section 1.
Defined Centers
The centers of a chart where, the system holds, energy is consistent and reliable. Later
teaching keeps the term, framing defined centers as “your consistent gifts.”

Definition
Which centers are joined to one another through defined channels, and how the defined centers
group together — single, split, triple-split, or quadruple-split definition, or no definition.
Definition follows directly from the centers and channels of the bodygraph.
Source: /doctrines, Section 1.
Gates
The 64 gates of the bodygraph, corresponding to the 64 hexagrams of the I’Ching. Gene Keys
uses the same 64 hexagram numbers, with each Gene Key corresponding to the same gate number.

Mode (to-do / to-wait)
In the pre-1997 “Definition Type and Mode” framework, a designation each chart carries,
derived from its Definition — broadly, a body designed to do (to act) or to wait. As
documented by the Zen Human Design lineage, this is the layer the Four Types later replaced.
Source: /doctrines, Section 1.
Open / Undefined Centers
The centers of a chart where, the system holds, a person is inconsistent, conditioned, and
vulnerable to amplifying others. Empowerment-era teaching reframes these as where a person is
“wise,” “empathic,” “absorbing” — a strength rather than a liability.

Type, Strategy, and the Reading of a Chart
Authority
The reliable inner decision-making mechanism the system assigns to a chart — emotional,
sacral, splenic, and so on. The IHDS curriculum defines seven Authority types; the correct
basis for Authority is contested across lineages. Later teaching reframes the term as “inner
wisdom” or “inner guidance.” Introduced in May 1997, with Type and Strategy.

/doctrines, Sections 1 and 7.
Incarnation Cross
The life purpose the system derives from four gates of a chart. Later teaching reframes it as
“your life purpose” or “your theme,” with the karmic language reduced.

Manifesting Generator
In Ra Uru Hu’s teaching, a Generator with additional manifesting capacity — a type of
Generator, not a fifth distinct Type. The widespread “five Types” framing does not appear in
Ra’s published materials or the IHDS curriculum. Quantum Human Design renames the Manifesting
Generator the “Time Bender.”

Not-Self
In the system’s language, the life lived from the conditioned mind — the false self said to
produce frustration, bitterness, anger, or disappointment. Later teaching softens the term to
“the conditioned self” or “misalignment,” and frequently drops it entirely; Quantum Human
Design renames the Not-Self Theme the “Pain Point.”

/doctrines, Section 6.
Profile
The two-line role or “costume” the system holds a person wears — written as two numbers, such
as 5/1. Later teaching reframes Profile as “your role,” “your purpose,” or “your superpower.”

Strategy
The prescribed way each Type is meant to engage: to inform (Manifestor), to respond
(Generator), to wait for the invitation (Projector), to wait a lunar cycle (Reflector).
Whether Strategy is a behavioral prescription or a mechanical observation is contested across
lineages. Later teaching reframes it as “flow” or “alignment.” Introduced in May 1997.

/doctrines, Sections 1 and 7.
Type
An energy classification of the chart: Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator,
Projector, Reflector. Ra Uru Hu and the IHDS teach four Types, with the Manifesting Generator
classified as a type of Generator; the “five Types” framing is a community usage without
primary-source support. The Zen Human Design lineage holds that the Types framework itself was
introduced in 1997 as a behavioral overlay and is not part of the original mechanics.

Variable / Primary Health System
The system’s advanced layer of arrows and prescriptions covering diet, environment, and
perception: four Variables per chart — Determination (digestion), Environment, Perspective,
Motivation — derived from the Personality and Design calculations. Added well after the 1997
overlay and largely published after Ra Uru Hu’s death in 2011; retained by the canon and IHDS,
largely dropped by the popularizers.

The Language of the Transmission
Conditioning
The pressure from open centers and other people that, the system holds, pulls a person away
from their design. Later teaching reframes it gently as “what isn’t yours” or “other people’s
energy.”
Source: /divergence/13-glossary.
Correct / Incorrect
Ra Uru Hu’s blunt binary for living as designed or not. Later teaching reframes it as
“aligned / out of alignment.”
Source: /divergence/13-glossary.
Deconditioning
The roughly seven-year process the system prescribes for releasing conditioning. Later
teaching reframes it as “alignment,” “coming home to yourself,” or “embodiment.”
Source: /divergence/13-glossary.
Determinism (“no choice”)
Ra Uru Hu’s hard claim that life is lived out, not chosen. Later teaching reframes this toward
agency, “alignment,” and conscious creation, or quietly removes it.
Source: /divergence/13-glossary.
Experiment
Ra Uru Hu’s insistence that the system be tested, not believed. Later teaching keeps the term
but softens it to “practice,” “journey,” or “exploration.”
Source: /divergence/13-glossary.
“Homogenized world” / “the Maia”
Ra Uru Hu’s terms for the conditioning pressure of society and for illusion. Mostly dropped by
later teaching as jargon.
Source: /divergence/13-glossary.
“Passenger consciousness”
Ra Uru Hu’s claim that the self is a passenger, not a driver. Dropped or softened by later
teaching, with agency restored.
Source: /divergence/13-glossary.
“Rave” prefix
Ra Uru Hu’s branding for the system’s components — Rave Chart, Rave Mandala, RaveAstrology.
Dropped by nearly everyone outside the canon.

Four Worlds
The Noble Sciences framework of Mental, Emotional, Physical, and Spiritual interpretive layers
added to the Human Design bodygraph — derived, in Eleanor Haspel-Portner’s account, from the
Kabbalistic Tree of Life, astrology, and her 45,000-case research base.

Gene Key (Shadow / Gift / Siddhi)
In Gene Keys, one of sixty-four archetypes, together with its low, stable, and highest
frequency bands — the Shadow, the Gift, and the Siddhi. Gene Keys uses the same 64 hexagram
numbers as Human Design’s 64 gates, reoriented toward a contemplative framework rather than
energetic mechanics.

Hologenetic Profile
The Gene Keys profile generated from the bodygraph calculation, comprising the Activation
Sequence, Venus Sequence, and Pearl Sequence. In Gene Keys teaching the chart is a starting
point for contemplation rather than a behavioral map.

Noble Energy Maps
Eleanor Haspel-Portner’s extended system, which uses the Human Design bodygraph as a
foundation and adds the Four Worlds framework as additional interpretive layers, describing
each channel as it functions in all four dimensions.

Quantum Human Design Type names
Karen Curry Parker’s Quantum Human Design systematically renames the Types: the Manifestor
becomes the Initiator, the Generator the Alchemist, the Manifesting Generator the Time Bender,
the Projector the Orchestrator, and the Reflector the Calibrator. Other terms are renamed in
the same pattern — Strategy becomes Quantum Alignment, the Not-Self Theme the Pain Point, the
Signature the Fulfillment Theme.

Tonal Cognition
The framework of John Martin and Theresa Blanding, published in September 2020, holding that
true Human Design inner authority must be rooted in the red (Design/unconscious/body) side of
the chart rather than in personality-based definition.
