Teaching focus

Eleanor Haspel-Portner, Ph.D. occupies a singular position in the history of the Human Design System: she is the only person Ra Uru Hu formally commissioned to validate the system scientifically. In 1996 she saw an advertisement for the Human Design System in the Mountain Astrologer magazine and recognized what she later described as the Mandala of Synthesis. She began studying privately and developed a relationship with Ra. In 1999, Ra asked her and her husband Marvin Portner M.D. to validate the Human Design System scientifically and clinically — working independently of the general Human Design community.

She brought a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, Committee on Human Development (1971) — with majors spanning psychology, sociology, anthropology, and biology — and the full apparatus of social science research methodology to the task. Her statistical research tested Type across five samples of 5,000 birth records drawn at random from the general population. The finding, published in Preliminary Research on the Human Design System and Health (co-authored with Ra Uru Hu, Marvin Portner M.D., Erik Memmert, and Charles Haspel), was that Type holds up as a highly significant differentiating variable at far beyond the 99% level of confidence. This remains the only statistically documented validation of any Human Design construct against a general population sample.

Her broader research spanning 30,000 matched sample cases and 15,000 clinical cases led to a more complex conclusion: that Human Design is, in her words, “an incomplete, faulty, and disempowering system because it is only a small snapshot of an individual’s process in the first three months of their development.” She departed Ra’s organization in 2002. Between 1999 and 2002 she and Ra co-authored 13 books published by Rave Life Sciences, including the Monographs on Human Design and Health series.

Following her departure she developed Noble Sciences and Beyond Human Design — her own expanded synthesis incorporating additional chart layers developed from the research data. In 2025 she republished her research and released updated books including The Science of Human Design: 30,000 Statistical Cases, 15,000 Clinical Cases, One Proven Map of Your Soul. She continues to practice and teach from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
