In the Human Design System, Self-Projected Authority belongs to a particular group of Projectors: charts where the G — the center the system associates with identity, love, and direction — is defined and linked through to the Throat, while none of the motor centers that would otherwise carry a decision are defined. The system reads this configuration as one in which truth is tied not to a bodily feeling but to the person’s own sense of self, expressed through speech.
In the system’s terms
The distinctive instruction attached to this authority is that the design should talk a decision out and listen to itself do it. The system holds that for this design clarity does not arrive as an internal sensation to be consulted; it surfaces in the voice — in what the person hears themselves say when they speak a choice aloud. The teaching therefore encourages this design to think through decisions in conversation, ideally with people who will simply listen rather than advise, so that the individual can hear their own direction emerge without another voice shaping it.
The system frames this as a matter of self-recognition: because the authority runs through the identity center, the words that carry a true yes are said to be the ones that sound like the person’s own self and direction, while a wrong turn reveals itself in speech that feels out of alignment with who they are. What the listeners contribute, in this account, is not counsel but a surface to speak against. The system places Self-Projected Authority fifth in its order, as one of the authorities available to Projectors when no motorised or emotional definition takes precedence. As with every authority, this is the system’s own description, presented as part of its model rather than as a claim this archive evaluates.
Where the authority framework came from
Authority is not part of the earliest Human Design material. Together with the Types and Strategy, it was introduced by Ra Uru Hu in May 1997, at a chart-reading seminar in Taos, New Mexico — four years into his American teaching and a decade after his 1987 account of receiving the system. The decision-making framework taught today, including the authorities specific to Projectors, was a later addition to the system’s earlier body of work.
