Variable and the Four Arrows (PHS)
Past the beginner's layers of type and strategy, the Human Design System teaches an advanced layer it calls Variable: four small arrows at the corners of a BodyGraph, and a body-and-mind framework — the Primary Health System, or PHS — read from them. This page sets out what the four arrows are, the four PHS transformations they carry, and how the system frames the layer. It is one of the most advanced and least settled parts of the system, and interpretations vary between teachers; this page reports the model rather than resolving it, and takes no position on whether it is true.
What Variable is
In the system's terms, Variable is read from four arrows printed at the top and bottom of the two head centers in a BodyGraph — two on the Design (red) side, two on the Personality (black) side, as set out in Design and Personality. Each arrow points left or right, and the system reads that direction as a setting: broadly, whether the part of a person it governs is "fixed" and focused or "open" and receptive. The four together are sometimes written out as a shorthand string (for instance "PLR DLL"), and the system frames them as a deeper layer that only comes into focus once type, definition, and profile are understood.
The system presents Variable as governing four transformations — two of the body and two of the mind — grouped under the Primary Health System. It is taught as advanced material, usually late in a curriculum, and Ra Uru Hu is documented as having introduced it in the later years of his teaching; the fine detail of how to apply it is where practitioners diverge most.
“Four arrows at the corners of the chart, two of the body and two of the mind — the advanced layer the system calls Variable, and reads through the Primary Health System.”
The four arrows and the PHS
The Primary Health System reads the four arrows as four transformations. The two on the Design side — Determination and Environment — the system ties to the body: what and how a person is said to be designed to eat, and where they are said to function best. The two on the Personality side — Motivation and Perspective — it ties to the mind: the underlying drive a person sees from, and the angle of attention they take in. Each is given a set of named states the arrow's direction is said to select.
| Transformation | Arrow / side | Governs | How the system frames it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Determination | Top-left · Design | The body / diet | The system ties this arrow to the Primary Health System — how a person is said to be designed to take in food and information: in what manner, and at what pace. It is the arrow around which the PHS diet framework is built. |
| Environment | Bottom-left · Design | The setting / digestion | Read as the surroundings the system says a body operates best in — the kind of place, rather than the kind of food. In much of the literature this arrow is discussed under the heading of Digestion alongside Determination. |
| Motivation | Top-right · Personality | The mind / the "why" | Framed as the underlying motivation the system says drives the conscious mind — the slant a person is said to see and speak from. It is paired with a "transference," a second state the mind is said to slip into under strain. |
| Perspective | Bottom-right · Personality | The view / awareness | Read as the angle of attention the mind is said to be designed to take — the vantage from which a person takes the world in. Like Motivation, it carries a paired transference state. |
The transformation names and their descriptions are the system's own, described here as part of its model rather than as claims this archive evaluates. Teachers differ on emphasis and on how literally to take the health and dietary framing; the archive reports the layer without endorsing any application of it. Nothing here is health advice.
Where Variable sits in a reading
Variable is treated as an advanced overlay, read after the foundational layers rather than instead of them. It rests on the same centers and the same two calculations that produce the rest of the chart, and most curricula reach it only once type, strategy, and authority are established. It is worth noting that even the beginner's framework — type, strategy, and authority — was a 1997 addition to a system Ra Uru Hu had been teaching in the United States since 1993, and Variable came later still; the layer's relative youth is part of why its interpretation is less settled. That history is documented from the primary record in the archive's two books. For the fuller map of every layer, see the Guide.
Sources: Variable, the four arrows, and the Primary Health System transformations — Determination, Cognition, Environment (Digestion), and Motivation/Perspective — are set out in the system's own literature, published by Jovian Archive and the IHDS; the I Ching supplies the gate set the arrows are read against. The centers and calculations they rest on are documented in the centers reference and the Guide. The founding and teaching history is documented from the primary record in ZENO and The Voice on Ibiza.
