Design and Personality: the Red and the Black
A Human Design BodyGraph is not calculated from a single moment. In the system's terms it is built by overlaying two — a conscious Personality taken at birth and printed in black, and an unconscious Design taken roughly three months earlier and printed in red. This page sets out what the two calculations are, when each is taken, and what the system claims each side represents. It reports the model; it does not judge whether the model is true.
Two calculations, one chart
Every position in a BodyGraph is worked out twice. The Personality calculation uses the moment of birth; the Design calculation uses an earlier point the system fixes not by the calendar but by the Sun's travel — roughly 88 degrees of solar arc before birth, which falls about three months earlier. Both runs place the same Sun, Earth, Nodes, Moon, and planets into gates; the chart you see is the two sets of activations laid over each other on one figure. Where a channel or center is completed by a mix of the two, the system reads it as wired by both the conscious and the unconscious side at once. The full arithmetic — the ephemeris, the solar-arc method, and the conversion into gate-and-line notation — is set out in how a chart is calculated.
The system frames the Personality side as the conscious self — the part a person is said to be aware of, identify with, and be able to speak about. Its planetary positions are printed in black down the right of the chart, and the system reads them as the mind and the sense of "who I am".
Framed as the unconscious, bodily self — the part the system says runs beneath awareness and is felt as the body and its fixed traits rather than known as a self-image. Its positions are printed in red down the left of the chart, and are described as inherited and operating whether or not the person notices.
“The black is the moment of birth and the part you know as yourself; the red is roughly three months earlier and the part the system says runs beneath your awareness, in the body.”
What the system says each side represents
The split into conscious and unconscious is the system's central framing of the two calculations. The Personality — the black — it treats as the mind: the self a person recognizes, can describe, and tends to identify with. The Design — the red — it treats as the body: a layer it describes as inherited and largely invisible to the person, expressed as fixed traits and reactions rather than as a self-image. The system holds that others often see a person's red side more readily than the person does, and that much of what it calls a reading is the work of bringing the two into view together.
The two Sun and Earth positions from both sides are also the four points the system draws the Incarnation Cross from, which is one reason it treats the Sun and Earth as the most heavily weighted gates in a chart — a weighting the system's own figures put at around seventy per cent between them. The relative weight the system assigns each planet is set out in the planets reference.
Where the two sides sit in a reading
Design and Personality underlie every other layer: type, definition, profile, and the Incarnation Cross are all read from the combined figure the two calculations produce. The reading a chart reference walks through the order most sessions take. It is worth noting that the beginner's layer — type, strategy, and authority — was a 1997 addition to a system Ra Uru Hu had been teaching in the United States since 1993; the two-calculation structure itself belongs to the earliest published form. That history is documented from the primary record in the archive's two books. For the fuller map of every layer, see the Guide.
Sources: the two calculations, the black/red convention, and the roughly 88-degree solar-arc design point are set out in the system's own literature, published by Jovian Archive and the IHDS; the I Ching supplies the gate set both runs place the planets into. The arithmetic is documented in how a chart is calculated, the points each run activates in the gates, and the surrounding layers in the Guide. The founding and teaching history is documented from the primary record in ZENO and The Voice on Ibiza.
