The Planets in Human Design
The gates in a BodyGraph do not appear on their own — each is switched on by a planet. In the system's terms the Sun, Earth, Nodes, Moon, and the rest of the bodies are read at two moments, and where each falls decides which gates a chart carries. This page sets out how the planetary activations place the gates and what weight the system gives each — the Sun and Earth said to carry the bulk of it. It reports the model; it does not judge whether the model is true.
How the planets place the gates
In the system's terms, a BodyGraph is generated by taking the positions of thirteen points — the Sun, the Earth, the North and South Nodes, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto — and reading which gate each one falls into. Because the system runs this twice, once for the conscious Personality and once for the unconscious Design (the two calculations set out in Design and Personality), a full chart lists twenty-six activations — thirteen planets in black and thirteen in red. Those activations are the raw material: which gates are lit, and from them which channels and centers come alive. What weight the system gives each
The system does not treat the placements as equal. It weights them, and it puts most of the weight on the Sun and the Earth: by its own account these two carry something on the order of seventy per cent of a chart between them, with the remaining bodies sharing the rest. This is why the Sun and Earth positions — taken from both the Personality and the Design sides — are the four gates the Incarnation Cross is drawn from, and why the faster, "personal" planets are generally read as saying more about the individual than the slow outer bodies, whose gates the system treats as generational.

The weightings and the meanings assigned to each body are the system's own, described here as part of its model rather than as claims this archive evaluates. The roughly seventy-per-cent figure for the Sun and Earth is the system's own characterization of their relative weight, not a measured quantity.
Where the planets sit in a reading
The planetary activations are the first step, not the reading itself: they light the gates, the gates complete the channels, and from there the system builds type, definition, profile, and the Incarnation Cross. The reading a chart reference walks through the order most sessions follow. It is worth noting that the beginner's layer — type, strategy, and authority — was a 1997 addition to a system Ra Uru Hu had been teaching in the United States since 1993, while the planetary calculation belongs to the earliest published form.
