The Incarnation Cross
Of all the layers the Human Design System reads from a BodyGraph, the Incarnation Cross is the one it presents as the largest — the frame it calls a person's life purpose. This page sets out what the cross is built from, the three angles the system sorts every cross into, and roughly how many crosses there are, in the system's own terms. It takes no position on whether any of it is true; it reports what the system claims and how the claim is put together.
What the Incarnation Cross is
In the system's terms, the Incarnation Cross is assembled from four gates — the positions of the Sun and the Earth in both of the two calculations the BodyGraph is built from. Human Design derives a chart by overlaying two moments: the Personality calculation, taken at the time of birth and described as the conscious, self-aware side of a person; and the Design calculation, taken roughly three months earlier and described as the unconscious, bodily side. The Sun and Earth are treated as the heaviest weighted positions in each. Take both from both, and you have four gates — the cross.
The system frames these four together as the deepest layer of the chart: not how a person operates day to day, which it assigns to type and strategy, but what it calls the overarching theme or purpose a life is said to carry. It is described as fixed for life and read only once the other layers are in place.
The gate the system treats as the strongest single expression in the chart — the one it says a person most consciously embodies.
The gate opposite the Personality Sun, described as the ground or ballast that steadies that expression.
The gate from the design calculation roughly three months before birth — cast as a bodily, inherited theme operating below awareness.
The gate opposite the Design Sun, described as the unconscious counterweight to it.

The three angles
Every Incarnation Cross belongs to one of three families the system calls angles. The angle is not chosen separately — it follows from a person's profile, the pairing of conscious and unconscious lines that the system reads alongside the cross. Each angle is given a one-line theme.

The themes — personal destiny, interpersonal or transpersonal karma, and fixed fate — are the system's own labels for the three angles, described here as part of its model rather than as claims this archive evaluates.
How many crosses there are
Because each cross is a specific arrangement of its four gates, and the arrangements are constrained by which line combinations can occur, the system arrives at a fixed catalogue of roughly 192 crosses in all, each with its own name — a name usually built from the angle plus a keyword or two. The right-angle and left-angle families account for most of them, with the juxtaposition band the smallest. A person's cross is one entry in that catalogue, and the system treats it as unchanging across a lifetime.
Where the cross sits in the chart
The Incarnation Cross is the last layer most readings reach, resting on top of the others: the gates supply its four points, the profile sets its angle, and it is read as the purpose-level frame around a chart whose day-to-day operation is described by type and strategy. It is worth noting that the layer a beginner meets first — type, strategy, and authority — was not part of Human Design when Ra Uru Hu began teaching it in the United States in 1993; that framework was introduced in 1997. In other hands: how Quantum Human Design reads the cross
The schools of Human Design diverge here in framing rather than in naming. Where it renames the types and the gates wholesale, Quantum Human Design (Karen Curry Parker) keeps the traditional cross names but reframes the Incarnation Cross as your Life Purpose — read as an energy or frequency signature and written up as a "Quantum Life Purpose Statement" rather than a fixed destiny or job. It does not give the 192 individual crosses new short names. That kind of divergence — the same chart in different vocabulary — is what Divergence maps in full.
