Line 1: the Investigator

Seeks a secure foundation by investigating and getting to the bottom of things.

What the 1st line is

The first line sits at the base of the hexagram, and the system reads it as the foundation the other five stand on. Its concern is security through knowing: the impulse to study a thing until the ground under it feels solid. Where a chart carries a first line, the system says the person needs to understand before they can act, and is uneasy acting on a footing they have not examined.

Reported as the system’s own account of the position, in the archive’s neutral register. The short name is carried as an identifying label, not as the founder’s fuller description of it.

Where it sits in the hexagram

Each of the sixty-four gates is a hexagram of six lines, and this is the 1 st of them, in the lower trigram. The system inherits the division from the I Ching, where a hexagram is read as two trigrams stacked, and it keeps the older reading of what the halves mean: lines one to three are framed as the more personal and inward positions, lines four to six as the more outward and transpersonal. That division is the reason the fourth line is described as a turn toward other people.

The line is not a feature of one gate. Every gate carries all six, so this position recurs sixty-four times in the system’s vocabulary, and its meaning is said to colour whichever gate it falls in. The derivation from the I Ching, and where the system departs from it, are documented at Human Design and the I Ching.

Where it appears in a chart

A profile is two lines, the conscious personality line over the unconscious design line. Line 1 appears in four of the twelve profiles:

The twelve pairs, and what the system claims each combination produces, are set out at the profiles.

The line by other names

Quantum Human Design (Karen Curry Parker) renames the six lines in positive-outcome language, as it does the five types. It calls this line The Resource. The Gene Keys (Richard Rudd) does not carry the line archetypes as behavioural positions: it works from the same sixty-four gates recast as a spectrum from Shadow through Gift to Siddhi.

Short labels are carried here for identification and comparison, never the other authors’ fuller descriptions. Where a school’s treatment could not be verified from its own materials, this archive records that rather than inferring one. The QHD name here is verified from a practitioner page setting both vocabularies side by side, which credits Karen Curry Parker as the author of the Quantum Human Design language. The full map of the schools is at Divergence.

Where the line framework sits in the record

The lines arrive with the profile. On the first-person account of the teachers who were in the room, the types, strategy, authority and profile were introduced together in a class in the spring of 1997, and the archive dates the occasion to the chart-reading seminar in Taos of May 17 and 18 that year, printed in a newsletter of December 1996. That is a decade after the transmission the system attributes itself to, which is a matter of record rather than of dispute: the schedule survives.

The hexagram lines themselves are much older, and the system does not claim to have invented them. What dates to 1997 is their use as a behavioural profile. The evidence is at the newsletter record, and the wider chronology at the timeline.
