The 1/3 Profile: Investigator / Martyr

The two lines

A profile is read from the lines of the two most prominent activations in a chart: the position of the sun in what the system calls the personality (or conscious) calculation, and its position in the design (or unconscious) calculation taken roughly three months before birth. Every gate maps to a six-line hexagram of the I Ching, so each activation lands on one of six line-positions, and the system gives each position a fixed archetype.

Line names and keynotes are the system's standard archetypes, described here as part of its model rather than as claims this archive evaluates. Wordings vary in emphasis from teacher to teacher.

How the 1/3 is read

Written personality-line over design-line, the profile is stated 1/3 — the Investigator line first, the Martyr line beneath it. The system treats the personality line as the part a person consciously identifies with and can speak to, and the design line as an unconscious, bodily disposition that others often notice before the person does. The profile is the interplay of the two: a investigator way of meeting the world, carried on a martyr undercurrent that runs whether or not it is recognized.

In the system's shorthand, the 1/3 is characterized as: A foundation built by investigation, tested and revised through trial and error. The keynote is a short pointer to how the system frames the pairing, not a fixed definition, and teachers differ in how they weight the conscious and unconscious halves.

The right angle

The twelve profiles do not combine freely into all thirty-six possible pairs; because of how the personality and design suns relate on the system's wheel, only twelve occur, sorted into three groups the system calls angles. The 1/3 is a right angle profile, which the system describes as a personal destiny — a life the system frames as turned inward on the individual’s own process, largely self-absorbed by design.

Where the profile framework came from

The profile sits inside the same body of material as strategy and authority — the apparatus most students meet first — and, like it, was not part of the earliest teaching. That framework was formalized and revised by Ra Uru Hu over the years following his arrival in the United States, much of it from 1997 onward, four years into his American teaching and a decade after his 1987 account of receiving the system. How the material was assembled, and what its arrival did to the teachers who had built the American school before it, is the subject of the archive's two documentary books, ZENO and The Voice on Ibiza. The profile by other names

The line names are standard across the mainstream schools that keep Ra Uru Hu's vocabulary. The one systematic exception is Quantum Human Design (Karen Curry Parker), which renames the six lines in positive-outcome language, so the 1/3 profile carries a different name in her system.
