Human Design and the Gene Keys: The Documented Relationship
This page documents the relationship between the Human Design System and the Gene Keys as it appears in this archive’s record: what each system is by its own account, where their documented attributes differ, and the points at which the two histories connect. It evaluates neither system. Every entry traces to material already published in this archive.
What each system is
The Human Design System. By the founder’s account, the system arrived in an eight-day encounter on Ibiza in January 1987. Its first book appeared in 1992; its central practical architecture — the four Types with their Strategy and Authority — was introduced, by participants’ first-hand accounts, in 1997. The system defines the BodyGraph of nine centers, sixty-four gates, and the channels between them; a synthesis of I Ching, astrology, the chakra system, and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life; the calculation from birth data of a conscious “Personality” and an unconscious “Design” some three months prior; and the practical teaching of living by one’s Strategy and Authority. Documented in this archive at the canon entry of Divergence.
The Gene Keys. A contemplative system created by the British teacher and poet Richard Rudd — in this archive’s summary, “the same sixty-four archetypes, turned from a decision-making system into a slow contemplative practice.” Rudd began writing it around 2002 and published the foundational book in 2011. It keeps the sixty-four-fold structure drawn from the I Ching, the calculation of a personal profile from astrological positions at birth, and the premise that an individual’s design can be read from a chart; it turns the mechanical, decision-making apparatus into a meditative, developmental path, asking a person to contemplate each of the sixty-four “keys” as a spectrum from “Shadow” through “Gift” to “Siddhi.” Documented in this archive at the Gene Keys entry of Divergence.

Documented attributes, side by side
The table compares the attributes of the two systems that this archive documents. Where the archive does not document an attribute, the cell says so.
| Attribute | Human Design | The Gene Keys |
|---|---|---|
| Origin year | By the founder’s account, received in an eight-day encounter on Ibiza in January 1987. First book published 1992. | Rudd began writing the Gene Keys around 2002, while still active in the Human Design community; the foundational book was published in 2011 (first edition, Gene Keys Publishing). |
| Founder | Ra Uru Hu (born Alan Robert Krakower, Montreal; died 2011). | Richard Rudd (born 1967), described in this archive as a British author, poet, and teacher; a senior Human Design teacher from 1997 to 2004. |
| Source texts | The Human Design System (1992, the “Black Book”); The Definitive Book of Human Design (Ra Uru Hu and Lynda Bunnell, 2011); the recorded course libraries of Jovian Archive and the IHDS. | Gene Keys (first edition, Gene Keys Publishing, 2011); the trade edition The Gene Keys: Embracing Your Higher Purpose (Watkins, 2013; anniversary edition 2024); the Golden Path materials and the Gene Keys online platform. |
| What it claims to read | A chart calculated from birth data — a conscious “Personality” and an unconscious “Design” some three months prior — rendered as a BodyGraph of nine centers, sixty-four gates, and connecting channels, with the practical teaching of living by one’s Strategy and Authority. | The same sixty-four archetypes read as a contemplative spectrum, each “key” running from a “Shadow” through a “Gift” to a “Siddhi,” with a personal profile calculated from astrological positions at birth. The chart, per this archive’s teaching record, is “a starting point for contemplation rather than a behavioral map.” |
| Terminology | Type, Strategy, Authority; centers, gates, channels; BodyGraph; the “Rave” prefix (Rave Chart, Rave Mandala). | Gene Keys; Shadow, Gift, Siddhi; the three sequences — Activation, Venus, and Pearl — gathered as the “Golden Path”; the Hologenetic Profile. Strategy and Authority are not used. |
| Institutional structure | After the founder’s death in 2011: the school to Lynda Bunnell, governance to the founder’s widow and sons, and the rights, through a corporate structure consolidated from 2016, held in a Singapore rights-holding company. Certification through the IHDS. | Gene Keys Ltd., with its own publishing house, online platform, and global community of readers. The affiliated Integral Human Design (Werner and Laura Pitzal, Vienna, in cooperation with Rudd) offers no certification at all, per its founders’ own statement as recorded in this archive. |

Points of connection in the record
The archive’s teaching record classifies the relationship between the two systems as “derivative and acknowledged” — the classification is the record’s, quoting the Gene Keys’ own statement of debt, and carries no evaluation here. The documented points of connection are these.
- Training through New Sun Services. In the account of Chaitanyo Taschler preserved in this archive’s ZENO record, Richard Rudd was among the early figures who “started out with New Sun Services’ classes” — the American organization directed by Zeno Dickson. The archive’s erasure record likewise describes Rudd as a British teacher who trained through New Sun Services. By the Gene Keys’ own published account, Rudd studied and taught the Human Design System with Ra Uru Hu across a seven-year period, 1997 to 2004; his first encounter with Human Design came through a reading given by Chetan Parkyn. See /zeno/4-the-wilderness-years and /teachers/richard-rudd.
- Living Your Design. The 2004 edition of the Living Your Design manual, published by Human Design America and Jovian Archive Corporation, is credited on its title page “Revised and edited by Richard Rudd, with contributions from Ra Uru Hu.” In Zeno Dickson’s recorded account, as preserved in the erasure record, Rudd’s book was incorporated into Ra’s teaching infrastructure without credit; the phrase survives as the name of a core IHDS introductory program. Both accounts are reported here as attributed.
- The UK school and the departure. Rudd founded and directed the Human Design school in the United Kingdom, leading it until Richard Beaumont’s contractual appointment as UK director in July 2004, and trained a generation of early British students. He began synthesizing the Gene Keys around 2002, while still active in the Human Design community, and, in the erasure record’s phrasing, later left Human Design to develop the Gene Keys.
- The acknowledged debt. Rudd credits the debt openly: the Gene Keys, in the school’s own statement, “owes much to The Human Design System, which was transmitted by Ra Uru Hu.” The archive’s divergence entry characterizes his posture as respectful divergence — not a correction of Human Design but a distinct evolution of it — and records that when Ra died in 2011, Rudd marked it with an elegy, “The Passing of Hu.” See the Witnesses chapter of The Voice on Ibiza.
- The bridge between vocabularies. Integral Human Design, developed by the Vienna analysts Werner and Laura Pitzal in cooperation with Rudd and hosted on the Gene Keys platform, reads the same chart through both vocabularies — Human Design’s and the Gene Keys’ — and, by its founders’ statement, offers no certification at all.
- The institutional boundary. The IHDS Professional Integrity Agreement, as documented in the erasure record, requires that Human Design offerings be kept separate from other modalities. The record preserves the account of Devon Martin — an IHDS-certified teacher publicly endorsed by Rudd — who described voluntarily revoking her professional contract after the agreement barred her from integrating the Gene Keys into her teaching. Her characterization is reported as her own.
- The republished Human Design books. Two books from Rudd’s IHDS teaching years — Human Design — The Revelation (2021) and Human Design — Circuitry (2021) — have been republished through Gene Keys Publishing, documented in this archive as foundational Human Design texts from his time as a senior IHDS teacher, not as Gene Keys materials. See /books.
- Reach. The archive’s Credential and the Reach record places Rudd among the figures whose public footprint accumulated outside the official certification path: the Gene Keys became a best-selling book translated into many languages, and Rudd was named in 2019, 2025, and 2026 to the Watkins list of the hundred most spiritually influential living people. The pattern is recorded there without comment.
