Human Design and Astrology: What the Record Shows

This page documents the relationship between the Human Design System and astrology as it appears in this archive’s record: the planetary calculation the two share, the founder’s own documented statements distinguishing his system, and how the practitioners this archive documents have described the relationship. It evaluates neither. Astrology itself is outside the archive’s scope; it appears here only as the record touches it.

What each system is

The Human Design System. By its own account, a synthesis of four older systems: the I Ching, which supplies its sixty-four gates; astrology, which supplies the planetary calculation; the Hindu chakra system, which supplies its centers in modified form; and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, which supplies the structure of its channels — with the language of genetics and neutrino physics layered over the whole. The system presents these borrowings as integrated into a single mechanism rather than assembled eclectically. Its central artifact, the BodyGraph, is calculated rather than interpreted intuitively. Documented in the architecture chapter of The Voice on Ibiza and the archive’s reader-questions entry.

Astrology. This archive does not document astrology as a system in its own right — no origin, founder, source texts, or institutions appear in the record. It appears in two capacities: as one of the four older systems in Human Design’s stated synthesis, supplying the planetary calculation; and in the words of the practitioners the archive documents, who speak of tropical and sidereal calculation traditions and of the interpretation of planetary positions. The archive’s reader-questions entry states the working distinction: “Astrology interprets the positions of the planets directly. Human Design takes the planetary calculation as raw data and feeds it through its own apparatus.”

Documented attributes, side by side

The table compares only what this archive documents. Because the archive is a record of the Human Design System, most attributes of astrology are outside it; those cells say so rather than filling the gap from elsewhere.

Attribute Human Design Astrology
Origin year By the founder’s account, received in an eight-day encounter on Ibiza in January 1987. First book published 1992. Not documented in this archive. The record refers only to constellations “picked and named” in antiquity and to astrology evolving from them — a practitioner’s characterization, not a dated history.
Founder Ra Uru Hu (born Alan Robert Krakower, Montreal; died 2011). Not documented in this archive.
Source texts The Human Design System (1992, the “Black Book”); The Definitive Book of Human Design (Ra Uru Hu and Lynda Bunnell, 2011); the recorded course libraries of Jovian Archive and the IHDS. Not documented in this archive. The Mountain Astrologer magazine (March 1996) appears in the record only as the venue of Human Design’s first English-language print exposure to a general astrological audience.
What it claims to read A BodyGraph produced by overlaying two calculations — the moment of birth and a “design” point roughly three months prior — onto a figure of nine centers, sixty-four gates, and connecting channels, from which the system derives claims about how a person is designed to operate. Per the archive’s reader-questions entry: “Astrology interprets the positions of the planets directly.” The two share a starting point — the moment of birth — but, in the record’s phrasing, diverge in everything they build from it.
Terminology Type, Strategy, Authority; centers, gates, channels; BodyGraph; the “Rave” prefix (Rave Chart, Rave Mandala, RaveAstrology). Documented in this archive only where it touches the shared calculation: planetary positions, the tropical and sidereal zodiacs, the ephemeris, and solar arc.
Institutional structure After the founder’s death in 2011: the school to Lynda Bunnell, governance to the founder’s widow and sons, and the rights held in a Singapore rights-holding company. Certification through the IHDS. Not documented in this archive.

Points of connection in the record

The calculation

The BodyGraph is generated from the tropical-zodiac positions of the sun, moon, nodes, and planets at two moments: the birth itself, and a “design” point roughly three months earlier — about eighty-eight degrees of solar arc before birth, calculated by solar arc rather than calendar days. Both computations require precise ephemeris data and a method for converting planetary positions into Human Design gate and line notation using the 64-hexagram Rave Mandala wheel. The system’s registered design mark, as documented in the archive’s record of the corporate estate, is five concentric circles carrying the 64 I Ching hexagrams and astrological symbols, with the bodygraph torso at the center. See the sources interlude and /software.

The founder’s own statements

  • The founder said he came to the system with no astrological background of his own; the ZENO record adds that he could not, when later pressed, name his astrological sign. See /divergence/faq and /voice-on-ibiza.
  • In Zeno Dickson’s recollection, as preserved in the ZENO record, Ra said that Human Design would put astrologers out of business — a framing she later described herself as working to repair. See /zeno/6-the-iconoclast.
  • By Chaitanyo Taschler’s account, Zeno — who had been interested in astrology for decades — asked Ra on the first day of their first meeting in 1993 about sidereal calculations for Human Design; his short answer was that the revelation specified tropical calculations. See /deconditioning.
  • The ZENO record notes that the Human Design System distinguishes itself from astrology by a claim to precision: its charts are calculated from an exact birth time, and the system holds that without an accurate time the finer calculations cannot be relied upon. See /zeno/appendix/h.

How practitioners describe the relationship

  • Zeno Dickson, who had read the stars for decades before she ever saw a body graph, staged “The Planets” in 2013 — eight webinars putting professional astrologers in front of her Human Design students — describing the class as designed “to go a long way to healing the old fracture borne out of disrespect for astrologers and an inflation of superiority as to what a Human Design chart shows,” and stating: “I consider astrology and the synthesis with the I Ching the interpretative basis and as such, it’s advanced Human Design.” See /zeno/6-the-iconoclast.
  • Chaitanyo Taschler, in newsletter statements preserved in the archive’s deconditioning record, holds that in Human Design “it’s not the planetary bodies within certain constellations of stars that condition life, but the neutrino stream from the entire universe,” and that “‘Sidereal Human Design’ does not exist. It’s an oxymoron.” His characterizations of sidereal and tropical astrology are his own and are reported as such.
  • Eleanor Haspel-Portner encountered Human Design in The Mountain Astrologer magazine in March 1996 — cited in the ZENO record as the system’s first English-language print exposure to a general astrological audience — and her later validation research drew matched samples against a vetted astrological birth-data bank. See /zeno/appendix/c and /voice-on-ibiza/08-the-architecture.
  • The public framing. The archive’s pop record documents that Human Design’s vocabulary entered mainstream wellness and astrology-adjacent conversation as social shorthand, and that Genetic Matrix established itself as a combined Human Design and astrology charting platform.
