Witnesses · Skeptic, from outside the community

Robert T. Carroll

The philosopher behind The Skeptic’s Dictionary, who treated the system as New Age pseudoscience.

Relationship to the founder

Carroll had no relationship with the founder and no standing in the community. He wrote from outside it, as a skeptic cataloguing claims, and his notice of Human Design is brief. That distance is what the testimony is for.

What they say

Writing in his Skeptic’s Dictionary newsletter in March 2012, Carroll recorded the founder’s account flatly, in the system’s own biographical language: “Krakower claimed that for eight days in 1987 he went through a process of mystical deconstruction climaxing with his encounter with the Voice, an intelligence that was far superior to anything he had ever experienced.”

He then added four words: “Who would doubt it?”

How the account is weighed

Interest: Skeptic, from outside the community Carroll’s testimony bears on the credibility of the account rather than on the man’s character, and he offers no evidence beyond the incredulity itself. It is carried here because the record needs it: the founder built a system on a transmission that had no witness, and named skeptics outside the community simply disbelieved him. The archive takes no position on that question; it records that the position was taken.
