Early life and career

Alan Robert Krakower was born in Montreal on 9 April 1948. Before there was any system to his name, his life was an ordinary and traceable one. He took a bachelor's degree and built a working career across advertising, magazine publishing, and media production; he composed and performed music, and he had done work in film. Nothing in that record marks him out as a mystic or points forward to what followed. He described himself, in later years, as a science-trained skeptic who held no mystical beliefs — a man who, when pressed, could not even name his own astrological sign. The road to Ibiza

In 1983, in his mid-thirties, Krakower left Canada. He made his way in time to Ibiza, in the Balearic Islands off the Spanish coast, where he took work as a schoolteacher and lived quietly. Ibiza is a real and documented place, and his presence there in the mid-1980s is part of the ordinary record. He arrived at the events of 1987, by his own later telling, not as a lifelong seeker but as someone with no expectation of anything unusual — which is the frame he himself put on what happened next, and part of why the account carries the weight it does for those who follow the system.

The eight days, as he told them

On the evening of 3 January 1987, by his own account, something began that did not end until the morning of 11 January — eight days and nights in which he said he neither ate nor slept, and through which a presence he called the Voice spoke to him without pause. What he described receiving was not an insight but an entire architecture: the mechanics of a system describing the design of the human form, the correspondences between the planets and the I Ching, and the framework of centers, gates, channels, and lines that he would spend the following decades making teachable. It was inside that experience, he said, that he was given the name Ra Uru Hu, and he set Alan Krakower aside. Building the system

Whatever is made of the eight days, what came after is a matter of ordinary record. He gave his first reading in the months after the encounter and drew the first bodygraphs by hand in the years that followed. Toward the end of the decade he began writing the textual foundation of the system and the materials that would be published as its early books, working out of Europe and finding the collaborators and translators who carried the material into print. He delivered his first public lectures in the early 1990s. The framework most newcomers meet first — the five Types, each with a Strategy and an Authority — was not part of that original exposition; he introduced it in 1997, a decade after the encounter and well into his teaching. The system as it is taught today was assembled across a quarter-century of work, not handed down complete in a week.

The American school, teaching, and death

From 1987 until his death, Ra Uru Hu taught. The system's reach into the United States began in November 1993, when he first flew to America at the invitation of two teachers who had recognized his descriptions and paid his airfare; the American school that grew from that visit, and the people who built it, are documented in the ZENO record. Over the following years he trained teachers, licensed analysts, and founded the institutions that carry the material today, teaching and developing it continuously until he died on 12 March 2011. What is documented, and what is his account

An honest biography of Ra Uru Hu has two layers, and it is worth keeping them apart. The man is documented: Alan Robert Krakower existed, the name Ra Uru Hu was his, the dates he gave for the encounter are fixed and consistent across his tellings, Ibiza is a real place, and 2011 is the year he died. A reader can confirm every one of those. What no reader and no archive can confirm is the Voice itself — an interior experience reported by one person, unwitnessed and unrepeatable, is not the kind of thing a documentary record can reach.

It reports plainly that Ra Uru Hu founded Human Design and that he said a Voice gave it to him; it does not assert that a Voice spoke on Ibiza in 1987, and it does not mock the man who said one did.
