Motor center and awareness center (the only center the system counts as both)
Biological association (as the system claims)
The kidneys, pancreas, prostate, lungs, and nervous system
Theme when defined
A consistent emotional wave; feelings that move in cycles rather than settling in the moment
Theme when undefined / open
Absorbing and amplifying the emotions in a room; avoiding confrontation to keep the peace
In the Human Design System, the Solar Plexus — the Emotional center — is described as the source of emotions and feelings, and it holds an unusual place in the system’s scheme: it is the only one of the nine counted as both a motor center and an awareness center. Anatomically the system ties it to the kidneys, pancreas, prostate, lungs, and nervous system.
In the system’s terms
The system’s signature claim about this center is the emotional wave: it describes emotional energy not as a steady state but as a movement through highs and lows over time. From this it draws one of its most emphasized rules — that for a person with a defined Solar Plexus “there is no truth in the now,” and clarity is said to come only across the wave rather than in a single emotional moment. Because the center is also a motor, the system treats emotion as a form of power, not merely of perception.
A defined Solar Plexus is described as running a consistent emotional wave — its own cyclical rhythm of feeling. An undefined or open Solar Plexus is described as taking in and magnifying the emotional states around it, feeling others’ moods as if they were its own, and prone to a particular pattern: avoiding confrontation and truth-telling in order to keep an artificial peace.
Open centers and the not-self
That conflict-avoidance is a standard example in the system’s account of the nine centers: the open ones are where a person is said to be conditioned, taking in energy that is not steadily their own — the pattern the system names the not-self. The open Solar Plexus swept up in the room’s emotions is among its most cited illustrations, and the practice the system prescribes, deconditioning, begins from these openings.
The framework that gives the emotional center its practical role in a chart — types, strategy, and authority, including the system’s “emotional authority” — was introduced by Ra Uru Hu only in May 1997, a history the archive documents in ZENO and The Voice on Ibiza.
The nine centres are a reworking of the chakra tradition’s seven. The system does not present this as borrowing but as mutation: its own account is that humanity shifted from a seven-centred to a nine-centred being, which is why the count does not match the tradition it draws on. The derivation, and the places where the two part company, are documented in full in the archive’s comparison.
The centres are one of the places the schools do not diverge much. Quantum Human Design (Karen Curry Parker) renames the five types wholesale and reframes the incarnation cross as a life purpose, but no verified renaming of the nine centres was located in its own published materials, and this archive does not supply one it cannot source. The Gene Keys (Richard Rudd) does not carry the centres at all: it works from the same sixty-four gates recast as a spectrum from Shadow through Gift to Siddhi, and drops the BodyGraph apparatus of centres, types and authority.
Short labels are carried here for identification and comparison, never the other authors’ fuller descriptions. Where a school’s treatment could not be verified from its own materials, this archive records that rather than inferring one. The full map is at Divergence.
