What Is BG5?

BG5 is the official business and career application of Human Design — the field’s own way of turning the birth chart toward work, careers, and teams. Unlike the offshoots built in other hands, it is run from inside the system’s own institutions, through the BG5 Business Institute, with its own certification track and consultants. This page documents what BG5 is by those institutions’ account and how it applies the chart to organizations. It reports the claims; it offers no career or hiring advice, and it does not evaluate the method.

The official business track

BG5 stands for “Base Group 5,” and Human Design’s own institutions present it as a distinct professional application rather than an informal extension of a general reading. It is administered by the BG5 Business Institute, which this archive documents as licensed by Jovian Archive — the single named international rights-holder across the school, the business institute, and the licensed national organizations — and which markets the method as proprietary. In the U.S. trademark record, the separate BG5 marks are owned by Inner Human Design Inc. of California; the full mark and rights record is at the trademark record.

Where the general guide reads the chart for self-understanding, BG5 repackages the same chart — its Type, Strategy, and Authority — for the workplace: how a person is said to work best, make decisions, and fit a role. The Institute certifies Career and Business Consultants and, at the advanced level, OC16 large-group consultants; the archive’s credential record documents the training as a multi-semester ladder held separately from the IHDS analyst path. The general field of Human-Design-for-work, of which BG5 is the official arm, is documented in the sibling page on Human Design for business and careers.

From the individual to the organization

BG5’s distinctive move is to extend the individual chart into group-level constructs, so that a team or an organization is read as an entity in its own right. The table sets out the units it works with, from one person up to a full organization. It describes what BG5 claims to read; it does not endorse the method.

Unit Scope What BG5 reads it as
The individual One person The chart’s Type, Strategy, and Authority are repackaged for careers — read for how a person is said to work best, decide, and fit a role, rather than for general self-understanding.
The Penta Three to five people BG5’s term for a small-group entity — the unit it claims a small working team can be read as, rather than as a loose set of individuals. The name gives BG5 its expansion, “Base Group 5.”
The OC16 Sixteen or more The analysis BG5 applies to larger organizations, described as covering groups of sixteen or more and trained as a separate advanced, large-group specialization.

Summarized from /human-design-business and /the-credential. The Penta and OC16 constructs and their scope are described from the BG5 Business Institute’s own published material (bg5businessinstitute.com) and Jovian Archive (jovianarchive.com). Where the archive does not establish a specific detail, the entry stays general; no citation is invented.

How BG5 relates to the wider system

BG5 is not a reworking of the mechanics in the way that some offshoots are: it keeps the canonical chart and its terminology and points them at a single domain — work. Its group constructs inherit the individual chart’s claims and extend them to collective decisions, which the archive documents as a documented offshoot with its own vocabulary and credentialing rather than as a validated business method. Readers new to the chart itself will find the underlying elements — the Types, the authorities, the centers — laid out plainly in the reader’s guide.

Where BG5 sits among the versions

BG5 is the official business arm of a system that has also diverged into other versions in other hands. The complete author-by-author reference — where each version came from, what it keeps and changes, and where BG5 sits among the lineages and derivative systems — is Divergence: The Schools and Systems of Human Design, Compared, the third of the archive’s three documentary books. A free sample is available before the full edition on Kindle Unlimited and in print.
