The Teaching Record

The Human Design System has been taught, extended, and reinterpreted by dozens of teachers across three decades. This page documents the major doctrinal positions across lineages and derivative systems — not to evaluate them, but to establish what each tradition holds and where they diverge. Every claim is sourced from publicly verifiable primary materials.

This page covers the Human Design System as transmitted by Ra Uru Hu and the major teaching lineages and derivative systems that followed. It does not evaluate or rank these approaches. It documents what each tradition holds, sourced from their own published materials, so that students, researchers, and practitioners can orient themselves within the landscape of teaching that exists. Section 1 — The Original Transmission

The Human Design System as Ra Uru Hu transmitted it between 1987 and 2011 is the reference point from which all other lineages and derivative systems depart. Ra’s mechanics are documented in his own published books, recordings, and the IHDS curriculum. The following represents the foundational positions of the original transmission.

Types
Four Types: Generator (which includes the Manifesting Generator as a type of Generator), Projector, Manifestor, Reflector. The Manifesting Generator is not a fifth distinct Type in Ra’s teaching — it is a Generator with additional manifesting capacity. The five-type framing is a common community misunderstanding. Strategy
Each Type has a specific Strategy that is the correct behavioral approach for that Type: Generators respond, Manifesting Generators respond and inform, Projectors wait for recognition and invitation, Manifestors inform before acting, Reflectors wait a lunar cycle. Authority
Seven Authority types determine decision-making: Emotional (Solar Plexus), Sacral, Splenic, Ego/Heart, Self-Projected (G Center), Mental Projector (outer authority), Lunar (Reflectors only). Source: IHDS curriculum; Ra Uru Hu recorded lectures.
Centers

Variable / PHS

Section 2 — Zen Human Design

Zen Human Design is the teaching lineage of Zeno Dickson (1952–2020) and Chaitanyo Taschler, operating from humandesignsystem.com — the oldest Human Design website in existence (built 1997). Zeno and Chaitanyo were Ra’s exclusively contracted U.S. representatives from 1993 and trained most of the first-generation American analysts. They departed from Ra’s organization in early 1999 following doctrinal disputes over the introduction of the Four Types behavioral overlay. Their teaching represents the pre-1997 mechanics — the system as Ra taught it before the Type strategy designations became mandatory. See /teachers/zeno-dickson and /teachers/chaitanyo-taschler.

Types, Strategy, and Authority
Zeno Dickson and Chaitanyo Taschler teach the original Human Design System as Ra presented it before 1997 — the mechanics of centers, channels, gates, and definition without behavioral prescriptions. The Four Types framework, Strategy, and Authority as absolute rules were introduced by Ra in 1997 and are not part of the original transmission as Zeno and Chaitanyo received it. In their own words: “In 1997, however, Ra introduced his ‘Four Types’ with their attendant rules of behavior ‘authority’ and ‘strategy’ and subsequently insisted that these were an absolute… We refused and ignored everything he pulled out of his hat after 1997.” Source: humandesignsystem.com/readings (Chaitanyo Taschler); Human Design Revealed (Zeno Dickson and Chaitanyo Taschler).
The 1993 contract
Ra drafted and signed a contract in Taos in late 1993 naming Zeno Dickson and Chaitanyo Taschler as his exclusive U.S. representatives. This contract was never formally terminated. Ra’s July 25, 2003 letter attempted to administratively erase them from the IHDS professional record. See /record Section 9. Section 3 — Gene Keys

Gene Keys is the system developed by Richard Rudd (born 1967), who trained as a senior Human Design teacher with Ra Uru Hu from 1997 to 2004 and built the Human Design school in the United Kingdom. Gene Keys uses the same 64 I’Ching hexagram numbers as Human Design’s 64 Gates, reorienting them toward a contemplative shadow/gift/siddhi framework rather than energetic mechanics and behavioral strategy. The lineage relationship is explicitly acknowledged by Gene Keys Ltd. See /teachers/richard-rudd.

Relationship to Human Design
Derivative and acknowledged. Gene Keys Ltd. states: “The Gene Keys owes much to The Human Design System, which was transmitted by Ra Uru Hu between the years 1987 and 2012. The 64 numbers
Gene Keys uses the same 64 hexagram numbers as Human Design’s 64 Gates. Each Gene Key number corresponds to the same Human Design gate number. The framework and interpretive methodology are distinct. Source: The Gene Keys: Embracing Your Higher Purpose (Richard Rudd, 2009).
Strategy and Authority
Not used. Gene Keys de-emphasizes Strategy and Authority entirely in favor of contemplation of the shadow, gift, and siddhi of each Gene Key. The bodygraph calculation is used to generate a Hologenetic Profile but the behavioral prescriptions of IHDS teaching are not part of the Gene Keys methodology. Richard Rudd’s HD period books
Two books from Rudd’s IHDS teaching years have been republished through Gene Keys Publishing: Human Design — The Revelation (2021) and Human Design — Circuitry (2021). These are documented as foundational Human Design texts written during his time as a senior IHDS teacher, not as Gene Keys materials. See /books. Section 4 — Noble Sciences / Beyond Human Design

Noble Sciences is the research and teaching practice of Eleanor Haspel-Portner, Ph.D. (University of Chicago, 1971), who was commissioned by Ra Uru Hu in 1999 to validate the Human Design System scientifically. Her research across 30,000 statistically matched cases and 15,000 clinical cases led her to conclude that the Human Design System is incomplete. She subsequently developed Noble Energy Maps — an extended system that uses the Human Design bodygraph as a foundation and adds the Four Worlds framework (Mental, Emotional, Physical, Spiritual) as additional interpretive layers. What her research validated
Human Design Type holds up as a statistically significant differentiating variable at beyond the 99% confidence level across five random samples of 5,000 birth records. This is the only statistically documented validation of any Human Design construct against a general population sample. What her research did not validate
The broader system. Haspel-Portner’s research led her to conclude that Human Design is “an incomplete, faulty, and disempowering system because it is only a small snapshot of an individual’s process in the first three months of their development.” Source: Voyage South Carolina interview, September 2025.
The Four Worlds extension
Noble Energy Maps extend the Human Design bodygraph through the Four Worlds framework — Mental, Emotional, Physical, and Spiritual — derived from the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, astrology, and Haspel-Portner’s 45,000-case research base. Relationship to IHDS

Section 5 — Tonal Cognition

Tonal Cognition is a framework developed by John Martin of Human Design Hawaii and Theresa Blanding, published in the video series “Your Body’s Life: Intro to Tonal Cognition” on September 14, 2020. It represents a direct challenge to the IHDS’s standard teaching on inner Authority and was the documented reason for John Martin’s removal from the IHDS professional register. Core challenge
True Human Design inner authority must be rooted in the red (Design/unconscious/body) side of the chart rather than in personality-based definition. The IHDS standard teaching on Authority does not adequately distinguish between personality-based and body-based authority. Challenged Authority types
The framework raises specific questions about Splenic Authority and Self-Projected Authority (G Center) as taught in the IHDS curriculum, arguing these designations do not meet the mechanical standard of body-rooted authority. Source: vimeo.com/457910823.
IHDS response
John Martin was removed from the IHDS professional register following the publication of the Tonal Cognition video series. The IHDS made no public statement about the removal. See /erasure. Section 6 — Quantum Human Design

Quantum Human Design is a derivative system developed by Karen Curry Parker, who trained through the IHDS professional pathway. It uses the same bodygraph calculation as Human Design but replaces Ra Uru Hu’s terminology with reframed language intended to be more accessible and empowering. It is the most commercially distributed derivative system in the English-speaking market as of June 2026.

Relationship to Human Design
Derivative. Uses the same bodygraph calculation and 64-gate structure. Terminology is systematically renamed: Types become Archetypes, Strategy becomes Quantum Alignment, Not-Self Theme becomes Pain Point, Signature becomes Fulfillment Theme, and so on. IHDS position
Quantum Human Design is not recognized by the IHDS as an authorized derivative. The IHDS Professional Integrity Agreement requires certified professionals to “use, offer or recommend Human Design System materials and products from official organizations” and prohibits creating derivative materials without written authorization from Jovian Archive. Section 7 — Contested Questions Across Lineages

The following questions are among the most contested across Human Design lineages and teaching traditions. This section maps the positions without resolving them.

1. Does the Human Design System have four Types or five?

  • Ra Uru Hu / IHDS: Four Types. The Manifesting Generator is a type of Generator — not a fifth distinct Type. Generators represent approximately 70% of the population, half of which are pure Generators and half Manifesting Generators.   • Zeno Dickson / Chaitanyo Taschler (Zen HD): Ra’s Four Types framework itself — including the MG classification — was introduced in 1997 as a behavioral overlay and is not part of the original mechanics. Zen HD teaches the pre-1997 system without any Type/Strategy/Authority prescriptions. The question of how many Types exist is secondary to whether the Types framework is mechanically valid at all.   • Community misunderstanding: A widespread but undocumented view holds that Human Design has five Types. This framing does not appear in Ra’s own published materials or the IHDS curriculum and has no primary source support.

2. Is Strategy a behavioral prescription or a mechanical observation?

  • Ra Uru Hu / IHDS: Strategy is the correct behavioral approach for each Type — an absolute rule for decision-making and life navigation.
  • Zeno Dickson / Chaitanyo Taschler: Strategy is a mechanical observation documenting how each Type operates; Ra’s post-1997 teaching converted observations into prescriptions.
  • John Martin / Theresa Blanding (Tonal Cognition): Strategy as taught post-1997 does not adequately distinguish between personality-based and body-based authority.

3. Is the Human Design System complete as Ra transmitted it?

  • Ra Uru Hu / IHDS: Yes — the system is complete as transmitted.
  • Eleanor Haspel-Portner / Noble Sciences: No — statistically and clinically incomplete; the Four Worlds extension addresses the gap.
  • Richard Rudd / Gene Keys: The 64-gate structure is foundational but the Gene Keys framework extends beyond the behavioral prescriptions of IHDS teaching.

4. What is the correct basis for inner Authority?

  • Ra Uru Hu / IHDS: Seven Authority types as defined in IHDS curriculum.
  • John Martin / Theresa Blanding (Tonal Cognition): True authority must be rooted in the Design (red/body) side; personality-based authority designations are mechanically problematic.

5. Does Jovian Archive hold copyright over the Human Design System?

  • Jovian Archive Media Pte. Ltd.: Yes — claims exclusive copyright over the system and all knowledge derived from Ra’s teachings.
  • Tribunale di Firenze (Florence Civil Court, June 3, 2020): No — no copyright subsists over the Human Design System as a set of ideas and methods; those ideas are freely discussable. See /record Section 2.
